Let’s Talk About Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree is one of the most versatile essential oils, and something always recommended to have on hand. It has a myriad of uses and some significant health benefits. Originating in Australia, Tea tree is obtained from the plant Melaleuca alternifolia, nowadays the plant has been grown in other places but down under is still where the bulk of the oil is derived. This is another oil that is often suggested for internal use, but once more we would strongly recommend that you never ingest any of the essential oils as they are known to be toxins when used in this way - it could leave you seriously sick or worse. To get the best therapeutic benefits from Tea Tree and other oils use them in diffusers or diluted in skin creams, massage oils or cleaning sprays applied externally only. Tea Tree is a natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic which makes it a truly beneficially oil to have around, so lets look at some of the specific uses.

In The Home

Before we get onto the healing properties for the body, we will start with the uses at home. Tea tree oil mixes with water, a couple of drops of lemon oil and some white vinegar and make an excellent home cleanser. It is great to have this mixture ready for winter illnesses as it can help halt the spread around the home. Wipe down surfaces, sinks, taps, toilet handles and door handles in order to kill off bugs before they are passed around the house. Used in this way tea tree is an efficient bacteria zapper and also have antimicrobial properties.

For Cuts and Infections

Again the tea tree oil needs to be diluted before being applied to the skin, but if you create a skin ointment with tea tree and lavender oil you have the perfect infection-fighting cream. Ensure you have cleaned the wound with water and then apply the cream and cover with a dressing. If you do this as soon as the cut occurs, you will reduce the chances of any infection being able to take hold. Studies are being carried out that have shown promising results for tea tree oil having the ability to kill MRSA and other staph type infections - suggesting it should really be used in hospital cleaning.

For Skin Problems

Another helpful use of tea tree oil is offering relief to those who suffer from eczema and psoriasis. These skin conditions can be itchy and painful as the skin becomes inflamed making it very uncomfortable for the sufferer. By creating a cream using coconut oil as a base and adding 4/5 drops of tea tree oil (and the same of lavender if you like the smell) you can soothe the skin and help to promote healing.

Send it Airborne

Finally, one of our favourite ways to use essential oils, pop some tea tree oil in your diffuser. Remember it is antibacterial and antifungal so promotes a healthy atmosphere when dispersed into the air using a diffuser. It helps all year round to decrease bugs and sniffles that come home from schools and work.
