🕯️ Essential Oils for Candle Making: Natural Scents for Handmade Bliss

There’s nothing quite like the warm glow of a handmade candle – except maybe the gentle, natural aroma it releases when scented with pure essential oils. Whether you're crafting for yourself, gifting loved ones, or launching a small business, using essential oils in candle making can transform your creations from simple to sensory.

At Mood Essential Oils, we stock high-quality, undiluted essential oils perfect for candle making, and in this blog we’ll guide you through the best oils to use, how to add them properly, and a few scent combinations to inspire your next pour.

🌿 Why Use Essential Oils in Candles?

While fragrance oils are commonly used in the candle industry, many people prefer essential oils for their natural origin and therapeutic properties. Here’s why:

  • 100% Natural Aromas

  • Non-toxic when used correctly

  • Potential wellbeing benefits (calming, uplifting, etc.)

  • Unique and subtle scent profiles

Essential oil candles not only smell lovely but can support relaxation, focus, or even sleep – making them great additions to your wellness routine.

🕯️ Best Essential Oils for Candle Making

Some essential oils are better suited to candle making due to their stability at higher temperatures and stronger scent throw. Here are a few favourites:

1. Lavender

Soothing and floral, lavender oil works beautifully in candles and blends well with many other scents.

2. Sweet Orange

A cheerful, uplifting citrus oil that holds its scent well in soy or beeswax candles.

3. Cedarwood

Warm, woody, and grounding – adds depth and a longer-lasting base note.

4. Lemongrass

Zesty and fresh with excellent scent throw. Great for kitchens or energising spaces.

5. Patchouli

Deep, earthy, and luxurious – ideal as a base note in more complex blends.

6. Rosemary

Herbal and crisp, great for focus and clarity. Works well with citrus or minty oils.

7. Eucalyptus

Clean and spa-like. Combine with lemon or peppermint for a breath-easy blend.

🔥 How to Add Essential Oils to Your Candles

Here’s a basic method using soy wax (ideal for beginners):

  1. Melt your wax – Use a double boiler to melt soy wax flakes to 75–80°C.

  2. Cool slightly – Let the wax cool to around 55–60°C before adding essential oils. Too hot and the oils will evaporate!

  3. Add oils – A good starting ratio is 6–10% essential oil of the total wax weight (e.g., 6–10g per 100g wax).

  4. Stir well – Mix thoroughly to distribute the scent.

  5. Pour and set – Carefully pour into your prepared containers and allow to cure for 24–48 hours.

🌸 Scent Blend Ideas

Here are a few candle blend ideas to get you started:

⚠️ Candle Making Tips

  • Always test your candles before selling or gifting

  • Ensure your containers and wicks are compatible with essential oil candles

  • Label clearly if the candle contains allergens or strong scents
